YONGSAN GARRISON, South Korea (March 14, 2013) -- The U.S. Army's top operational command in Korea is training for its primary mission as a combined and joint task force headquarters during Exercise Key Resolve 2013.
Eighth Army transitioned from its previous role as an Army Service Component Command, or ASCC, to a Field Army in early 2012.
U.S. Army Pacific assumed Eighth Army's ASCC role as part of Pacific integration.
Eighth Army will operate out of a mobile command post during the annual computer simulation exercise, which is being held from March 11-21.
"Key Resolve enables us to train for our primary mission," said Eighth Army Deputy Commanding General for Operations Maj. Gen. Walter M. Golden. "It ensures we are ready to confront and defeat a wide variety of threats."
Golden said that Eighth Army will play a key role during the exercise that will include U.S. troops from the United States.
"This exercise improves our ability to defend freedom on the Korean Peninsula and maintain stability in the region," said Golden. "And it demonstrates our unwavering commitment to the Republic of Korea-United States Alliance."
Key Resolve takes place around the same time every year. It is conducted during the same timeframe as Exercise Foal Eagle, a peninsula-wide combined and joint field training exercise that runs from March 1 to April 30.
