WASHINGTON, February 27, 2013 -- Under Secretary of the Army Joseph W. Westphal met with Lt. Gen. Hernán Mardones, chief of the Chilean Armed Forces, at the Pentagon, to discuss Army-to-Army cooperation efforts, and foster closer relationships between the two militaries. Lt. Gen. Mardones visited Washington D.C. as a part of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff's Counterpart program.

Lt. Gen. Mardones Rios also received a mission and capabilities briefing during a visit to the Joint Force Headquarters - National Capital Region and the U.S. Army Military District of Washington (JFHQ-NCR/MDW) at Fort Lesley J. McNair. His briefing, conducted by Maj. Gen. Michael S. Linnington, JFHQ-NCR/MDW commanding general, focused on interagency relationships, Joint Task Force employment and disaster response during National Special Security Events (NSSEs) in the NCR.

In addition to meeting with senior U.S. Army leaders, Lt. Gen. Mardones participated in a wreath laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknowns, Arlington National Cemetery.

All of these engagements deepen U.S. - Chile defense cooperation to effectively confront shared security challenges and strengthen Army-to-Army cooperation efforts.
