KINGSPORT, Tenn. -- BAE Systems and Holston Army Ammunition Plant marked another notable environmental accomplishment in February.
On February 4, the A2B control building, a new administrative structure built on the installation in conjunction with the movement of Area A production and equipment to Area B, received silver certification in the Green Building Certification Institute's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification system.
According to the GBCI website, "LEED is a voluntary, consensus-based, market¬-driven program that provides third-party verification of green buildings." LEED certification means BAE Systems created a structure with lower waste outputs, lower energy inputs, and overall healthier effects on its environment and occupants than a non-green building.
As explained by Dan Deason, acids division manager for BAE, some of the green features of the building include sources of natural light, uncovered natural floors, environmentally-friendly carpets, low-chemical paint, and decorative parking lot pavers.
"Some of the nicer things about this building are actually LEED certification requirements," Deason said. "The decorative pavers allow for car engine drippings and other substances to drain through the parking lot and into the ground instead of traveling to the rivers and streams as runoff."
Deason also pointed out the large and numerous windows in the building, which serve as significant sources of natural light. In addition, Deason explained, "The light tubes in the ceiling funnel natural light into the corridors of the building, and light control sensors automatically adjust fluorescent light levels accordingly."
Holston Army Ammunition Plant is a government-owned, contractor- operated facility located in Kingsport, Tenn. Since 1942, HSAAP has produced chemical explosives in support of our Warfighters and currently produces explosive fills for every type of ordnance used by the United States Department of Defense.
HSAAP is a subordinate installation of the Joint Munitions Command. From its headquarters at the Rock Island Arsenal, JMC operates a nationwide network of conventional ammunition manufacturing plants and storage depots, and provides on-site ammunition experts to U.S. combat units wherever they are stationed or deployed. JMC's customers are U.S. forces of all military services, other U.S. government agencies and allied nations.
