USACE Galveston District earns 2 Communitas Awards

GALVESTON, Texas (Feb. 12, 2013) -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Galveston District earned two Communitas Awards for its community relations programs: Corps Cares: Connecting the Community with the Corps and April Pools Day.

The Communitas Awards is an international effort to recognize exceptional businesses, organizations and individuals who are unselfishly giving of themselves and their resources, and those who are changing how they do business to benefit their communities. Nominees are evaluated on the extent and effectiveness of their efforts.

Category 5: Community Service - Corps Cares: Connecting the Community with the Corps: A comprehensive community relations program to increase understanding of the Corps' mission of providing vital public engineering services in peace and war to strengthen the nation's security, energize the economy and reduce risks from disasters.

Category 6: Community Service/Making a Difference - April Pools Day: A one-day media event to educate the public about water safety and partner with community leaders, volunteers and citizens to help reduce public fatalities and improve public safety. Visit http://1.usa.gov/VGdlcx.

"We truly appreciate being recognized by a program that is dedicated to recognizing community service and social responsibility," said Col. Christopher Sallese, USACE Galveston District commander. "Staff's coordinated efforts enabled the district to achieve many firsts and reach its goals of supporting the Department of the Army's engagement efforts to build relationships and promote awareness and understanding as well as encourage participation in Corps programs."

Communitas is a Latin word that means people coming together for the good of a community. Communitas is inspired by the vision of a better world and is an attempt to do something about it through volunteerism, investment and ethical, sustainable business practices.
