CAMP CASEY, South Korea -- Carey Fitness Center was transformed into a winter wonderland Dec. 14 as Cirque Dreams Holidaze brought their unique acrobatic circus to Korea. An international cast of performers astonished Soldiers, civilians and their family members with feats of balance, agility and flexibility.
The stop in Warrior Country was one of five the troupe made to military bases in South Korea. The acts were musically woven together by the female "ringmaster" who dressed as an ice princess, sang familiar holiday songs, as well as original numbers created just for the Holidaze show.
The winter wonderland included a wide variety of multi-talented and brilliantly costumed artists. "Penguins" waddled across the stage as the head penguin balanced himself atop a myriad of balls and tubes.
Others, dressed as reindeer, showed their agility and sure-footedness as they jumped rope in unison. Sometimes the reindeers jumped one deer to a rope, but they also teamed up with two, three and even all four jumping with the same rope.
The troupe's contortionists showed their flexibility by fitting their bodies through rings and tubes. Aerial performers showed their gracefulness as they soared high above the stage wrapped in silk ribbons.
The Cirque Dreams cast weren't the evening's only performers. The Holidaze symphony conductor, Garrit Guadan, led five members of the audience in an impromptu cowbell orchestra.
"We are here to perform for the military to show our appreciation for them," said Guadan, whose father served in Vietnam. "These men and women serve our country, which is a beautiful and wonderful thing and this is our chance to give them some entertainment they normally wouldn't get a chance to see over here."
