NASA GLENN RESEARCH CENTER, OHIO - An Army Research Laboratory-supported technology, the Nutating Engine, won a prestigious Silver Award at the annual World's Best Technology Showcase in Arlington, Texas.

The Nutating Engine is an innovative, four-stroke cycle, which converts nutating (wobbly plate) disk motion directly into rotary motion without the usual mechanical complexity found in conventional internal combustion piston engines.

For any given power level, the Nutating Engine is expected to be less than half the weight and volume of a conventional engine. The initial concept for the engine was developed with funding from the Small Business Innovative Research program through ARL's Vehicle Technology Directorate.

The WBTshowcase is the nation's premiere event show using the largest collection of undiscovered technologies emanating from top universities, labs and research institutions from across the country and around the globe. It is produced in cooperation with the National Association of Seed and Venture Funds, the Federal Laboratory Consortium of Technology Transfer, and the Southeastern Universities Research Association.

The Nutating Engine was selected from 70 finalist technologies. The award may help attract funds to fully develop the engine concept for use in small, heavy-fuel engines for a wide variety of military and civilian applications.
