CAMP ZAMA, Japan (Dec. 10, 2012) -- The Camp Zama Army team won the annual flag football showdown a second year in a row against Navy, beating the team from Naval Air Facility Atsugi 7-6 during 2012 Army vs. Navy Game at Zama American High School's Barry Huitema football field at Camp Zama, Dec. 8.
The Army team was comprised mostly of players from the intramural flag football teams from the U.S. Army Japan and I Corps (Forward) Special Troops Battalion, the 78th Signal Battalion, the 35th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, and U.S. Army Garrison Japan's Family, Moral, Welfare and Recreation.
Both teams kept a tight defense during the entire game, but the Army's tight teamwork helped them achieve victory, illustrating the USARJ motto, "Ichidan," which means "one team."
"We know the defense came prepared and folks were ready," said Sgt. Muntrail Donnerson, assigned to Special Troops Battalion, U.S. Army Japan and I Corps (Forward), who pulled out some amazing interceptions in the fourth quarter.
Camp Zama community members cheered for the home team during the annual event, including the U.S. Army Japan Band. Camp Zama youth cheerleaders helped to heat up the game by performing a rousing halftime show.
"It was incredible," said Col. Eric Tilley, U.S. Army Garrison Japan commander. "For the second year in a row, Army beat Navy here in the Kanto Plain. At the end of the day, after the game was over with, we are all truly one team."
