SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. - Brig. Gen. Brian R. Layer assumed command of the Military Surface Deployment and Distribution Command during a ceremony May 12 at the U.S. Transportation Command headquarters building.

Layer, who previously held the position of deputy commanding general, will be acting commander until SDDC\'s 16th commanding general, Brig. Gen. James L. Hodge, assumes command in June.

The ceremony was hosted by Gen. Norton A. Schwartz, commander, U.S. Transportation Command. Gen. Benjamin S. Griffin, commander, U.S. Army Materiel Command, officiated. Maj. Gen. Kathleen M. Gainey, the outgoing commanding general, will be assigned as director for logistics, J-4, the Joint Staff, Washington, D.C.

Gainey took the reins of SDDC Oct. 6, 2006, and oversaw the 2007 relocation of its headquarters from Alexandria, Va., to Scott Air Force Base, Ill.

SDDC provides global surface deployment and distribution services to meet the nation's objectives. SDDC deploys and sustains more than 90 percent of the Department of Defense's equipment and supplies by leveraging the capability of commercial industry and other military services.
