HEIDELBERG, Germany -- U.S. Army Europe is helping to foster mutual understanding with our allies and partner nations by sponsoring geopolitical training seminars that focus on German and European military, political and economic systems.

Held six times a year in Hamburg at the Haus Rissen Institute, an international think tank for politics and economics, the training seminars are excellent primers on the European operating environment.

The seminar dates for fiscal year 2013 are:

For officers (all grades) and civilian employees (DoD and local national)

• April 15-19, 2013 (sign-up deadline March 19, 2013)

• May 13-17, 2013 (sign-up deadline April 14, 2013)

• July 22-16, 2013 (sign-up deadline June 24 2013)

For noncommissioned officers and civilian employees (DoD and local national)

• Feb. 4-8, 2013 (sign-up deadline Jan. 7, 2013)

• June 24-28, 2013 (sign-up deadline March 23, 2013)

The training seminars are an investment in the Army's future, designed to develop adaptable and thoughtful leaders. Army commanders and senior staff officers, civilians and non-commissioned officers and other personnel who regularly interact with host nation authorities and institutions spend a week discussing current and historical geopolitical issues with Air Force and German Forces personnel in a joint and combined educational environment.

Although topics are updated frequently to keep pace with current events, typical subjects at the

seminars -- taught by journalists, scientists, and professors from the University of Hamburg,

Berlin Free University, and Haus Rissen -- include:

• The European Union as a strategic actor in international crisis management;

• Current U.S. and European issues;

• Comparative analysis of the German and the U.S. political system.

USAREUR, via the Office of the Chief of Public Affairs (OCPA), funds the training seminar costs, including lodging and meals for USAREUR, USEUCOM, USAFRICOM, and IMCOM-Europe participants. Sending commands/organizations fund travel and per diem.

Interested applicants must have at least one year remaining on their tour after attending the training seminar and TDY approval from their unit or organization.
