During this holiday season, members of our 412th Theater Engineer Command Family will celebrate the holidays in different areas across the country. While many of you will spend this special time with loved ones and friends, others will be continuing our nation's fight in theaters overseas away from their Families. The service and sacrifice of all our Soldiers and Families continue to be humbling reminders of the price of freedom. Thank you for all you do to ensure this precious gift is sustained today and for generations.

As you travel along our nation's highways, remember that safety plays an important role in keeping the holidays happy. With winter weather setting in and record numbers of travelers forecast for our highways and roads, long-distance journeys can be particularly risky for Soldiers driving to visit Family and friends. The Travel Risk Planning System (Trips), available online at https://crc.army.mii/DrivinqPov can help you plan for possible hazards and provides a tool, to prevent accidents, prior to traveling. The minute you step into a vehicle, there is potential for you to become a statistic if you don't remain aware of your surroundings. Most importantly, remember no matter how tempting it may feel for you to quickly get to your Family, you need to be cautious in your travel.

As we celebrate the upcoming holiday season, take a moment to reflect on the Soldiers who lost their lives this past year and to remember our Soldiers currently deployed defending our nation. Let's put extra emphasis on safety during the holidays and reach out to those who need help to stay safe. Become a designated driver when necessary or arrange for cab service to ensure everyone makes it home safely. We must all look out for each other as members of the Army Reserve, and effectively manage risk, especially during off-duty activities.

Best wishes and have a safe and enjoyable holiday season.

WILLIAM M. BUCKLER, JR.

Major General, USAR
