FORT GEORGE G. MEADE, Md. (Nov. 6, 2012) -- Fort Meade Garrison Commander Col. Edward Rothstein presented a check for $14,770.41 today on behalf of installation worship service members to fight hunger.
Mark Byrd, inter-faith coordinator for the Maryland Governor's Office of Community Initiatives, accepted the check in Rothstein's office for the Maryland Food Bank.
The money was collected by the Fort Meade Religious Support Office through a designated offering involving all installation chapel services on Sept. 30 in response to Gov. Martin O'Malley's call to engage all Marylanders in community service projects focused on ending hunger and protecting the environment.
All nine of the Fort Meade worship services supported the Day of Caring. They include the Apostolic Service, Catholic Mass, Protestant Contemporary Service, Episcopal service, Gospel Protestant Service, Islamic service, Jewish service, Main Post Protestant Service and Spanish Protestant Service.
The Interfaith Day of Service was a regional effort by Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia and the District of Columbia.
The Day of Service encouraged nonprofit organizations and religious groups - churches, youth groups and religious-affiliated schools -- to recruit members and supporters to participate in their area.
