U.S. Army Garrison - Detroit Arsenal, Mich. The Family, Morale, Welfare and Recreation fitness center at the Detroit Arsenal provides quality of life enhancements and supports the fitness needs of all active duty, retiree, reservist, department of defense and non-appropriated fund civilians and contracted employees at the Detroit Arsenal.
The benefits of regular exercise are well documented and include weight management, improved sleep, strengthening of heart, lungs and muscles, management of certain chronic diseases such as osteoporosis and osteoarthritis, increased emotional well-being and improved endurance.
"We stride for maximum utilization of services, promoting good health habits, encouraging soldiers and participants to stay physically fit," said Travis Kelly, fitness center manager. "Our goal is to ensure maximum participation in our ever-changing community. We will continue to network with other FMWR programs, the external community and usage of commercial sponsorship program."
The 24-hour facility occupies approximately 4,000 square feet and is comprised of free weights, cardio equipment, a multipurpose room for stretching or group exercises and locker rooms. Three employees staff the center and are available to assist patrons from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday - Friday.
The center's staff is available to help people meet their fitness needs and goals. One such program is the Community Health Promotion Program that just finished its tenth session. CHPP encourages participants to engage in a program of consistent exercise and other positive health habits. This program reduces blood pressure, body composition and overall weight. First line supervisors may approve up to three hours per week excused to participate in this command sponsored formal physical exercise. Available to all DA civilian employees, CHPP lasts up to six months. Pre and post program participation evaluations are required. Participants are monitored continuously during the exercise.
Aerobics, interval boot camp and P90X are some of the group exercise programs that are offered. All classes limit rest and maximize workouts by focusing on total body and core synergistic exercises.
The fitness center staff provides the opportunity for a Detroit Arsenal team to participate in the annual Army Ten Miler. This team competed the last three years and placed top ten in the division all three times. The fitness center also coordinates and assists FMWR events such as Robot Trot 5k Run, World Wide Day of Play, Spouse Appreciation Day, and Organization Day sports.
The FMWR fitness center staff has established relationships with area gyms and fitness centers to provide discounts to employees due to space constraints. They also offer sports programs through partnered facilities outside the installation due to lack of a sports facility. The main partner is Liberty Park, offering a dome and outdoor flag football, sand volleyball and softball league. Basketball is offered through the YMCA, bowling by Regal Lanes and golf through Mulligan's Golf Course at Selfridge in the spring.
