YONGSAN GARRISON, Republic of Korea -- Superheroes, princesses and even a vampires roamed around the family housing areas of Yongsan to gather as many sweet treats as they could all the while shouting "trick or treat."
The U.S. Army Garrison Yongsan community celebrated Halloween and provided Servicemembers, Families and Civilians the opportunity to enjoy a spooky night with a bucket full of candy here, Oct. 27.
Children were able to collect candy thanks to the generosity of the adults, who wanted to celebrate the classic occasion along with their young ones.
"This is one of those wonderful events that my daughter really enjoys," said Phillip Lopez, an engineer for Eighth Army. "Anytime we have an event like this, it is really great for the kids."
The inclement weather could not stop the joy of the kids. Although it rained, they did not hesitate to get wet and keep on trick-or-treating. Parents, some in their own costumes, escorted the kids and encouraged them to earn more treats.
"The weather is a little bit poor, but it is working out great for us," Lopez said "We would love to see more of these type of events that kids and parents can enjoy together."
Despite the wet weather, USAG Yongsan's Directorate of Emergency Services and the 142nd Military Police Company remained vigilant at crosswalks and entrances to housing areas. They taught children the importance of safety and also provided them with a few treats and safety gear.
"We wanted to ensure everyone had a good time during Halloween," said Ricky Oxendine, director of Emergency Services for USAG Yongsan. "But most importantly we wanted to make sure everyone stayed safe because that is a top priority we have committed to the Area II Community."
USAG Yongsan also organized a Trunk-or Treat event at the Seoul American Elementary School parking lot to make trick-or-treating as safe and accessible as possible.
"Because Halloween is in the middle of the week, we wanted to be able to have Trunk-or-Treat on Saturday," said Joanne Love, special events coordinator for U.S Army Garrison Yongsan's Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation. "We wanted families from other areas such as to be able to come out and join us. We didn't want them to have to think about having a work day the very next day."
