CAMP HUMPHREYS -- The first Beacon Hill Disc Golf Fall Classic, hosted by Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation, was held, Oct. 20, on Beacon Hill.
"The set-up of this course here is hugely momentous," said Tom Kunneke, an avid disc golf player from Daegu. "A lot of Soldiers and civilians look for alternative recreation, and everybody (pretty much) knows how to throw a Frisbee (the disc). It's cool."
The new Disc Golf course cost roughly $9,000 dollars. It is equipped with 19 permanent baskets, nine portable baskets, tee signs and 100 discs.
"I'm very excited about being here for the first tournament on a fantastic course," said competitive player Eric Fitzsimons. "It's a great mix of short holes for the beginning player, yet, there are still some technical shots where you would have to really hit your line."
Disc Golf is similar to golf in that there are three basic disks used: the drivers, mid-range and putters.
"Just like (regular) golf, you drive for show, putt for dough," Kunneke said.
"These disks were engineered for different flight characteristics," said competitor Michael Meteer. "For example, they are use for speed, fade, and recovery. Some discs will fly very slow and stable, while others can veer sharply to the right or the left. It is a game of skill."
Kim, Sung-bae, the chairman of the Korea Professional Disc Golf Association, said, "I think today will be a great day and the players from other cities will appreciate the effort in developing and installing this course here. I hope the participants enjoy this interesting course and the beautiful weather of Korean Fall."
"I love it," said participant James Kim. "One of the best things about this course is that they have real permanent baskets."
This is the first permanent 18-hole disc golf course.
Registration for the tournament started at 8 a.m. and there was a barbeque for those who participated.
There were three categories of players: pro, amateur, and children. The winners in each division won a disc of their own.
"I was so happy because everybody kept saying they were having a good time" stated Kim, Se-yong, a recreation specialist Outdoor Recreation. "They also said that our Disc Golf course is the best course ever."
