Picerne Military Housing is making its curbside recycling program for on-post residents easier by eliminating the need to separate recyclables and moving the weekly collection of recyclables to Thursdays.
The newly improved program will also include glass.
Beginning Sept. 27, residents will no longer need to separate items for curbside collection. Residents who choose to participate in the recycling program can simply place all items they wish to have recycled into their recycling bins and place the bins curbside Thursday mornings before 6:30 a.m.
"We all know recycling is important to the environment, but we saw that only about 50 percent of our families were participating in the recycling program," said Darin Utterback, Picerne Military Housing at Fort Sill community management director. "We listened to feedback from our families and realized we needed to make some changes to the program to make it more user-friendly for our residents and increase participation."
What can be recycled?
The following recyclable materials are accepted:
* Cardboard
* Plastics including drink bottles, milk and juice cartons, fruit and pudding cups and plastic tubs
* Glass
* Paper including notebook, construction and colored paper, newspapers, magazines and envelopes
* Aluminum
* Steel and tin
What items cannot be recycled?
* Plastic foam
* Plastic grocery bags
* Paperback or hardbound books
* Bathroom waste such as toilet paper and paper towels
* Food and candy wrappers
* Plate glass
* Aluminum pie plates and foil
* Light bulbs
* Hazardous wastes
* Alkaline batteries
* Juice drink packages
To be collected for recycling, recyclables must be loose in the bins. Bagged or unacceptable items will be disposed of as trash, and the containers will be tagged as nonrecyclable. Residents should rinse food residue from recyclable containers to limit odors and pests.
Beginning in December, each family living on post will receive a new 96-gallon recycling cart. Picerne Military Housing will collect the old recycling bins and replace them with the new recycling carts in early December. The new, green carts will hold 60 more gallons of recyclable materials than the bins currently used and will feature a lid and wheels for resident convenience.
Another change residents will see this month is in their bulk trash collection schedule. Beginning Monday, September 24, bulk trash items such as furniture and appliances will only be picked up on Mondays. Residents will need to place bulk items curbside no later than 6:30 a.m. each Monday for collection.
Household trash collection will remain on Mondays. On-post residents can stay up-to-date on all their service schedules by visiting www.sillpicerne.com/residents/calendar.
