Are you the next rising star? If you believe you've got what it takes to compete in the Army's singing talent search, sign up by Sept. 14 for the Operation Rising Star competition.

It is open to active duty, National Guard or Reserve Soldiers from any branch of service or military family members 18 years or older with a valid military ID.

The Fort Sill competition heats up with the preliminary round Sept. 21 at 5:30 p.m. at the Backbone Lounge in the Patriot Club.

"The two-week competition will combine the popularity of the TV show 'American Idol' with the talents of our military performers," said event organizer Cara Bell, Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation recreation manager.

"The preliminary round Sept. 21 is also the elimination round. Contestants will perform a cappella with no props," she said. "The finals Sept. 28 are also at the Backbone Lounge at 5:30 p.m. Patrons and contestants are encouraged to make a night of it and attend Final Friday at 4:30 p.m."

The finals are judged by the audience and a panel of judges.

"Audience votes make up 50 percent of the determination of who becomes the local rising star," said Bell.

Contestants have a chance to win the ultimate recording music experience. Fort Sill's "top star" will win $500 and may advance to compete in the televised Armywide finals. The winning contestant of the Armywide competition will receive a paid trip to Hollywood, Calif., to record his or her own three-song CD and $1,000 in spending money.

Bell said competitors should plan on bringing a cheering section to the event. For the audience members, there will be a spirit award for the best supportive unit or family readiness group, she said. "The $300 award goes to the most supportive unit or FRG that attends the weekly competitions."
