Tigers, ponies, dogs and pigeons -- oh my!

See all the excitement of the Culpepper & Merriweather Circus Sept. 15 and 16 when the big top goes up on Fort Sill. Everyone can save $3 per ticket by getting advance tickets to the show.

The circus opens with a tent-raising Sept. 15 at 9 a.m. on Cowan Field, behind Cowan Dental Clinic on Randolph Road.

"This is the same circus with all the amazing stunts and thrilling shows that visited Fort Sill in March 2011, but this year they have a new look," said Cara Bell, Family and MWR recreation manager. "It's a wonderful circus that offers wholesome family entertainment at its best; with thrilling high-wire performances, funny clowns, a variety of animals including tigers, a lion, ponies, dogs and feathered friends."

The circus is open to the public and is sure to be remembered by young and old alike as a treasured part of American culture. The goal of the circus performers is to provide the audience with the most authentic, traditional American circus experience possible.

"Everyone is invited to come out Sept. 15 at 9 a.m. to see the tent-raising where the stakes are driven in the ground with sledgehammers and the big top goes up," said Bell. "This year they have a brand new tent to raise."

After the tent-raising, the crowd can get a behind-the-scenes circus tour from 10-10:45 a.m. where they can meet and learn all about the Culpepper & Merriweather Circus family. The tour includes a walk about the circus grounds. Learn interesting facts about the performers, the history of the show and the different species of animals in the circus family. The presentation also covers such topics as hygiene and the veterinary care the animals receive.

Skeeter the Clown from the Culpepper & Merriweather Circus visited children at Nye Library Sept. 7 to promote the circus and give children a chance to win free circus tickets.

Bell said there is also a coloring contest for the kids. "Children can get a picture to color at www.cmcircus.com with more information about the contest," she said. "The winners will be announced during the shows."

Show times are Sept. 15 and 16 at 2 and 4:30 p.m. Advance tickets are available through Sept. 14 at the Adventure Travel offices in MWR Headquarters in Building 4700 or Central Mall in Lawton. Advance tickets are $9 for adults and $6 for children, ages 2 through 12. Day-of-show tickets are $12 for adults and $7 for children and are only available at the event site.
