DONA ANA, N.M. - Soldiers from 1st Battalion, 35th Armor Regiment, 2nd Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, conducted squad live-fire training while integrating the Nett Warrior system Aug. 22, in preparation for the upcoming Network Integration Evaluation 13.1.
The Nett Warrior is a handheld communications device which includes a radio, a helmet-mounted display, and a hand-held data input device similar to a smart phone. The device, which gives soldiers and leaders increased situational awareness on the battlefield, utilizes the Improved Outer Tactical Vest by running the system's wires through it.
"It's good training," said Sgt. 1st Class Kevin Jones, a platoon sergeant in B Company, 1-35th Armor. "The week before this was classroom work, particularly learning the numerous changes and updates that have been made to the system," he said.
The mission of the 2nd HBCT, 1st AD, is to train and test new Army concepts as well as developing plans for the next generation of combat weapons and technologies. Training events such as the squad live fire allow the equipment to be validated before its rigorous evaluation during NIE 13.1, which is scheduled for Fall of 2012.
"In conjunction with the training, we learn how to implement this system with our standard operating procedure," said Jones.
With the exponential progression of technology and its increasingly valuable uses on and off the battlefield, training such as this is invaluable, ensuring the absolute readiness of units such as the 2nd HBCT, 1st AD, throughout the Army.
