YONGSAN GARRISON, Republic of Korea -- To help kids get ready to go back to school, U.S. Army Garrison Yongsan Child Youth Schools and Services (CYSS) organized the Back to School Block Party here, August 24.
Conversations and laughs were shared as students and parents had the opportunity to talk to school administrators and teachers, and also ask questions about upcoming school year.
"Beginning of the school year always makes me feel a little excited and nervous at the same time," said Jacob McMurray, 8th grader at SAMS. I think having the back to school block party is a great way to spend one of the last days of summer with our friends without having homework when I go back home."
Joseph C. Jacks, CYSS Middle School and Teen director, was glad to see students back safely from their summer vacation and looks forward to seeing every one of them on the first day of school.
"This is one last hang-out before going back to school," Jacks said. "It is great to see kids having a good time, and I hope the party somewhat helps kids get back into the school year."
During the block party, a variety of food, snacks, and games were prepared. Each student was also given a raffle ticket and the winners received a free backpack filled with school supplies.
For some children, they did not have the opportunity to see their friends over the long summer break. So they used this time to explain what they experience over their break to their friends.
"I really enjoyed the games and food at the party, McMurray said. However, the fact that I was with my friends here was the biggest factor that made this a joyful atmosphere."
