Fort Sill Picerne Military Housing has completed 136 new homes and 242 renovations since beginning its construction and development projects in June 2010.

Construction has also begun on the first modern neighborhood center and site work will soon be under way on a second family-friendly center. With all the activity going on throughout family housing, Picerne is shifting the standard of how people view living on post.

"It's amazing to see the changes taking place in the neighborhoods," said Tim Toohey, Fort Sill Picerne Military Housing Program director. "Whether it's new construction or renovations, families are moving into improved homes almost every day."

Picerne began placing families into new homes in Fort Sill's newest neighborhood, Buffalo Soldier Acres in December. Once complete, the neighborhood will house 432 new homes for senior noncommissioned officers, command sergeants major, company-grade officers and field-grade officers.

The neighborhood will be a mixture of new three- and four-bedroom homes with safe rooms, two living areas and upstairs washer and dryer hookups. Homes range from 1,700 to 2,232 square feet of living space.

Another project that is making a dramatic impact on the quality of life of Fort Sill's on-post families is the renovation work being done by Picerne.

In addition to homes that have already received renovations, 80 more homes are scheduled to undergo enhancements this year. During renovation, homes receive kitchen and laundry upgrades, new flooring and paint, new lighting and plumbing fixtures. Non-historic homes receive the addition of a safe room.

Off Geronimo and Rumbough roads, construction continues on Picerne's Southern Plains Neighborhood Center. The center will be approximately 10,000 square feet, and it will offer amenities such as a swimming pool, computer lab, fitness center, children's play room, kitchen and meeting spaces. The center, which will be the first of three, is scheduled for completion in May 2013, in time for the Memorial Day holiday.

"Neighborhood centers are really the heart and soul of the neighborhood," said Amber McNeil, Picerne communications manager. "It's really a hub of activity."

Site work will soon begin on a similar facility in the Old Cavalry Post neighborhood. Some families along Tyner Road are being relocated so the homes can be razed to make way for the center, which will be near Fort Sill Boulevard and King Road.

"In addition to the construction and development activities, we are dedicated to giving the families the absolute best in customer service. Taking care of families is still the heart of what we do, and our neighborhood teams work very hard to make sure the needs of Fort Sill's families are met," said Toohey.
