Army Deputy Chief Management Officer speaks to Army Senior Leaders

Mr. Mark Lewis, Deputy Chief Management Officer for the Army, shared his thoughts with 30 Senior Army Executives at the Army Senior Executive Education Program held at Mendoza School of Business, Notre Dame University. The intermediate level course is designed to teach strategic leadership to Senior Executive Service members and select General Officers. Topics included Army Force Generation (ARFORGEN), Business Transformation, Army Budget, and current operating environment.

Mr. Lewis used his time to facilitate a discussion about the challenges and opportunities that face the Army today and as we progress towards the Army of 2020. He asked the students to reflect on how they support the current ARFORGEN model and how to stay relevant in future changes to the ARFOGEN model.

On the business side of the Army, Lewis emphasized the need for the Senior Civilian Leaders to remain strategically focused and understand current and future environment. He stressed the importance of effective management with fewer resources. He also lauded the work that senior Army leaders are completing to adapt the many processes to better align the Institutional Army with the agile operating force, ensuring we provide trained and ready forces to the Combatant Commanders in the most cost efficient and effective manner.

Mr. Lewis closed the session with questions from the class. He stressed the importance of carrying their concerns and message to the Army Senior Leaders. He asked the students to promote resource-informed decision making, use available Army tools to measure outcomes objectively, ineffectiveness, and unnecessary redundancy, and cultivate stewardship.
