You may have noticed the larger U.S. flag flying last week in front of the Army Materiel Command headquarters building.
It was a garrison flag, the largest flown by the Army -- a 20-foot hoist by 38-foot fly. And the banner was flown on the AMC flagpole July 2-5 in observance of the Fourth of July.
"It's a gorgeous sight," Staff Sgt. Kristoffer Underwood, one of the AMC G-3/5/7 noncommissioned officers who hoisted the flag at 11:20 a.m. July 2, said. "And it's an amazing flag to see because it's so big. It epitomizes who we are as a country. And it's so big, so vast and so amazing. I mean it just brings tears."
AMC Protocol procures all of the flags for the headquarters. AMC protocol chief Heine Rivera said his office ordered the garrison flag about a year ago and it flies for special occasions like the Fourth of July.
"This is the first time that that garrison flag has touched that pole," Underwood said. "I'm sitting here at awe of it really. I mean everything pales in comparison."
The NCOs planned to return a post flag to the pole July 5. By comparison, a post flag's dimensions are 8-foot-11 3/8 inch hoist by 17-foot fly.
