With great courage and vision our founding fathers created this Nation with the ideals of liberty and independence for all. I encourage you to reflect on these values and the freedoms we cherish as we celebrate our independence on our Nation's 236th Birthday.

As we celebrate the Fourth of July, remember that we cannot accept certain risks such as drinking and driving and operating a watercraft, speeding on the open road, not wearing seat belts, helmets, or using personal floatation devices. These choices usually prove to be deadly more often than not. Choosing safety and prevention over risk is our responsibility as leaders in our communities, and for our Families and our Army Family.

I am asking all leaders and Soldiers to take advantage of the Army Safety Center's Take 5 campaign that raises awareness of common seasonal hazards. Click on this link for access to materials and information:

https://safety.army.mil/multimedia/CAMPAIGNSINITIATIVES/SpringSummerSafety2012/tabid/2310/Default.aspx The "Safe Summer Tool Kit" among other items are available to download and can be part of your safety programs that assist Soldiers, Civilians, and their Families during their holiday and every day activities.

Take 5 as you enjoy this patriotic holiday. However you choose to spend the 4th of July, I count on each of you to put safety first and to ensure that your Soldiers and Civilians do as well. Army Safe is Army Strong.

Serving to Heal…Honored to Serve!
