The Alaska District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers manages a workload ranging between $100 and $200 million a year at Fort Wainwright.
By 2013, the number of Soldiers in Alaska is expected to rise from 10,500 to 15,000 with half of these troops assigned to Fort Wainwright in Fairbanks.
In Fiscal Year 2007, the Alaska District awarded contracts valued at about $168 million to build seven projects at Fort Wainwright. Figures for its military construction program are expected to remain in this range for at least the next three years.
Currently, the Corps is constructing facilities for the 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division at the installation. It also is involved with work to support Aviation Task Force 49.

Aca,!Ac Bassett Army Community Hospital: Replaces the original hospital with a state-of-art 32-bed healthcare facility that provides world-class medical services covering internal medicine; general surgery; ear, nose and throat; orthopedics; obstetrics and gynecology; pediatrics and family practice. Serves as the only Army hospital in Alaska's interior region. Contract amount: $183.5 million. Completion date: October 2006.
Aca,!Ac Barracks - 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division: Accommodates 360 Soldiers in apartment-style quarters. Each room features private sleeping areas and walk-in closets, as well as a shared bathroom and kitchenette. In addition, rooms are wired for telephone, cable and internet access. Contract amount: $41.8 million. Scheduled completion date: March 2009.
Aca,!Ac Family Housing - Southern Cross: Provides 67 family housing replacement units for junior noncommissioned officers. Includes integral garages, supporting infrastructure and neighborhood amenities. Replaces 112 inadequate family housing units in the same housing area that were demolished to provide sites for the new construction. The floor layout, curb appeal and quality finishes of the homes have received extremely positive feedback. In 2007, the Alaska District was named the USACE Project Delivery Team of the Year for its outstanding work on the Southern Cross Family Housing Area. Contract amount: $42 million.
Aca,!Ac Family Housing - Siku Basin: Features 126 officer and enlisted family housing replacement units with integral garages, supporting infrastructure and neighborhood amenities. At least 5 percent of the units will be constructed in a manner that is accessible and easily modifiable to accommodate the requirements of the physically disabled. Contract amount: $73.5 million. Scheduled completion date: July 2008.
Aca,!Ac Family Housing - North Town: Provides for whole neighborhood revitalization through construction of 72 junior and senior enlisted family quarters. Consists of 56 junior noncommissioned officer three-bedroom units and 16 senior noncommissioned officer five-bedroom units. Replaces 128 inadequate family housing units in the Southern Cross housing area that will be demolished to provide sites for the new construction. The project features variously configured multi-unit, two-story buildings that are conventionally on-site constructed houses built to current standards. Five units will be built in a manner that is easily modifiable to accommodate the requirements of the disabled. Contract amount: $44.7 million. Scheduled completion date: June 2008.
Aca,!Ac Family Housing - Bear Paw: Includes 75 family housing units for junior noncommissioned officers. This new construction will provide variously configured multi-family structures with attached garages. The project will provide all equipment and appliances for functional living units. At least 5 percent of the units will be constructed in a manner that is accessible and easily modifiable to accommodate the requirements of the physically disabled. Contract amount: $36.6 million. Scheduled completion date: May 2008.
