Robin Cordovez already has ample opportunities to work with volunteer organizations and those yielding their time to volunteering. Now she will have even more time to fine-tune her expertise in volunteerism.
Cordovez, Army Community Service's Army Volunteer Corps coordinator, has been selected to a board position with the Northern Virginia Association for Volunteer Administration, a professional, non-profit group which commits its resources and efforts toward involving volunteers in community organizations and services. On the NVAVA board, Cordovez will hold the resource development chair and will be primarily responsible for gathering the growing amounts of information on volunteer organizations and individuals who wish to give their time to those organizations.
"The resource development chair is a liaison to local, state and national volunteer management," said Cordovez, who has been a member of NVAVA since 2011. "The main part of my duties is accumulating from all these different local, state and national resources and to compile them into one specific avenue and to get those resources out to the members [of the NVAVA]."
The chair position will give Cordovez the chance to branch out her volunteerism base. She will learn more about the region's volunteer opportunities as well as serving as an ambassador fostering volunteerism for Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall.
"My goal as volunteer coordinator here on base is to reach out to as many organizations as I can," Cordovez said. "Getting involved in those different areas, different associations and outreach opportunities kind of helps grow the volunteer program here and gives volunteers opportunities here, but it also lets others know what we're doing here and vice versa."
On base, Cordovez works placing volunteers in positions at JBM-HH groups like Rader Clinic and the Old Post Chapel. ACS is in partnership with 22 organizations to find opportunities for Soldiers, Family members, youth and retirees who wish to donate their time. Her appointment to the NVAVA board is welcomed as a challenge to promote herself, JBM-HH volunteerism efforts and the organization.
"I'm excited; I never had this sort of role to play before," she said. "And I think it is a great opportunity for me to grow individually and professionally. My goal is to let our organization become better known in the community and the types of things we're doing."
