WIESBADEN, Germany - For the thousands of military members who serve around the globe, there are thousands of spouses who support them daily in accomplishing the intricacies of the military mission.
And while the job of defending freedom can be arduous and thankless, the same can be said of the duties of supporting freedom's defenders.
That was the reason Wiesbaden Army Community Service staff members thought it fitting to celebrate this special population with an event May 30 at the Wiesbaden Entertainment Center.
"Our military spouses need to know they are appreciated," said Jan Meert, ACS director, who said that her staff tried to schedule the event as close as possible to Military Spouse Appreciation Day, which is observed annually the Friday before Mother's Day.
Nearly 100 spouses were out to be celebrated during the event that was packaged as an opportunity to relax, socialize and learn, a part of a much grander scheme to help spouses enjoy their tour in Germany.
"Not only are they meeting one another, but they are finding out what is available in the community," said Meert. As a result of the garrison's partnerships with Rüdesheim and Eltville, spouses had the opportunity to learn from representatives about the various offerings and happenings that extend beyond the local military community.
The event offered a variety of informational presentations that included topics such as how to handle media interviews, cupcake decorating, how to introduce ice breakers, hosting a tea party, cosmetic surgery, making stuffed foods, the drinks of Germany, geo-caching and fashion tips.
"We really wanted the spouses to get a break by offering something that was interesting and educational," said Meert, adding that free child care was available and the event was held while children were in school.
Already the ACS staff is looking ahead to next year.
"We're already working on it for next year because the feedback for the event was so positive," said Meert who hopes to make it an annual affair.
Those who are interested in presenting or who have ideas or input for next year's event should contact ACS at mil 335-5254 or civ (0611) 4080-254 -- or stop by the location at Hainerberg Housing Building 7790.
