The Department of Defense announced today Peter C. W. Flory was selected to serve as NATO assistant secretary general for defence investment (ASG/DI), beginning in January 2007.
As the ASG/DI, he will be responsible for the promotion of NATO armaments cooperation policies and programs, and for military common funding. The ASG/DI is chairman of NATO's Conference of National Armaments Directors (CNAD), chairman of the board of directors for NATO's Consultation, Command, and Control Organization, and oversees management of the NATO Security Investment Programme.
Looking back on his time at the Pentagon, Flory said, "It has been an honor to serve the President and Secretary Rumsfeld over five challenging years. I have been privileged to work with our nation's finest, military and civilian."
Flory has served as assistant secretary of defense for international security policy since August 2005. In this position, he was principal advisor to the secretary of defense on the formulation and coordination of policy for NATO, Europe, Russia, the Central Asian republics, the Caucusus and the Balkans, nuclear forces, missile defense, technology security policy, counter-proliferation, nonproliferation, space and arms control.
From July 2001 to July 2005, Flory served as principal deputy assistant secretary of defense for international security affairs, where he assisted in the formulation and coordination of international security strategy and policy for South Asia, the Middle East and Persian Gulf, East Asia, Africa, and Latin America.
