Crane, Ind. -- Crane Army Ammunition Activity highlighted its new two building production complex to Brig. Gen. (promotable) Gustave Perna, commanding general, Joint Munitions Command, during his April 16 visit to the Southern Indiana ammunition activity.

The complex features a refurbished production building and newly constructed break room building. Together, the buildings increase not only the quality of work environment for CAAA, but also enables energy saving through its modern features.

CAAA Civil Engineer Matt Deaton explained to Perna that by adding the break room building next to the complex, time will be saved by not having to drive employees to another location for their breaks. He also discussed how the production building was modified to not only save energy, but also improve safety.

According to CAAA Civil Engineer Lauren Shipman, the renovations are a great example of CAAA's vision for improving our 1940s-era production buildings. She said, "The project removed exterior barricades for easier building access, increased usable floor space by filling in the unused track well and replaced the building's lighting, lightning protection and heating."

Other quality of work environment improvements include new epoxy flooring, an upgraded restroom, and improved life safety with additional exit doors. Steam decentralization as well as replacing the old siding with insulated metal panels will greatly improve the energy efficiency of the building.

During his visit to CAAA, Perna also reviewed the Activity's strategic plan and efforts to improve its efficiency and efficiencies for the future fiscal years. He stressed that the entire JMC Enterprise needed to focus planning for the potential of reduced budgets and workloads. He said, "Everything's easy when you're the number one priority. You have lots of money. It's when budgets are tight, that the work is hard."

Established Oct. 1977, CAAA maintains ordnance professionals and infrastructure in order to receive, store, ship, produce, renovate and demilitarize conventional ammunition, missiles and related components. The Army activity is a subordinate of the Joint Munitions Command and is located on Naval Support Activity Crane.
