SEOUL, Republic of Korea-- Danish Crown Prince Frederik Andre Henrik Christian and his wife, Princess Mary Elizabeth Donaldson, visited the War Memorial of Korea near U.S. Army Garrison Yongsan to commemorate the Soldiers under United Nations Command who lost their lives during the Korean War, May 10.
The special guests started their War Memorial tour at the side entrance of the building where the memorial foyer and rotunda are located. After listening to a short briefing about the Korean War, given by General Director of the War Memorial of Korea Sun Young-jae, the couple walked through the memorial foyer where the names of more than 200,000 fallen Soldiers and their nations' flags are carved.
The Eighth Army Band set the mood for the solemn event, by playing the national anthems of both South Korea and Denmark.
The royal couple recognized and honored the Soldiers by lighting incense sticks, participating in a wreath-laying ceremony and observing a moment of silence during the playing of 'Last Post.' The royal couple then stood for a solemn remembrance in front of a monument on which the names of Danish Soldiers who died during the Korean War are listed.
Twenty-one countries under United Nations Command took part in the Korean War on the Republic of Korea's side. It is not an overstatement to say that the prosperity of South Korea is built on their commitment to protect the freedom of the country.
During the Korean War, 630 Danish Soldiers were deployed to contribute to the United Nations efforts. They gave medical aid to warriors with the hospital ship Jutlandia. By providing two officers to the United Nations Command, Denmark steadfastly supports peace and stability on the Korean peninsula to this day.
The royal couple was on a six-day visit to the country to promote solid bilateral relations. On Sunday, they visited the Joint Security Area in the Demilitarized Zone between North and South Korea.
