PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY, Calif. - Preschoolers celebrated Earth Day with lessons on recycling and invasive weeds at the Monterey Road Child Development Center April 23.

First, the children were visited by Presidio of Monterey Garrison Commander Col. Joel J. Clark who read the book "Michael Recycle" and discussed the importance of recycling and what items are recyclable.

Next, the children moved outside where the garrison's Natural Resources Program Manager Lorrie Madison directed the youngsters in pulling non-native, invasive ice plants. The ice-plant pull was in preparation of the expansion of the center's garden.

After the ice plants are fully removed, native vegetation will be reintroduced to the area, which will also have room for growing edible plants.
