Crane, Ind. -- Crane Army Ammunition Activity employee Angela Bray received a Building Energy Monitor Award April 26 at the Crane Energy Expo for her as an energy monitor that significantly contributed to the efficiency of the ammunition activity.

The award, presented by CAAA Civilian Executive Assistant Norman Thomas, was given to Bray during a ceremony that highlighted the efforts of both the Army and Navy units at Crane to reduce energy waste and increase efficiency.

Thomas said Bray immediately scheduled an energy audit of her building following her BEM training. Following the audit, Thomas said, "She was able to recognize energy savings opportunities in her building and submitted six work orders to remedy energy inefficiencies found."

"Angela has set an example for other BEMs to follow," Thomas said, "demonstrating that initiative and energy use awareness can make a large impact on the efficiency of CAAA."

The Energy Expo was designed to showcase efforts at Naval Support Activity Crane to improve its energy efficiencies. It also brought in contractors and businesses from the surrounding area to help inform employees about partnerships with the military that are helping to reduce energy consumption in the Department of Defense.

During the ceremony Thomas also spoke of many of the CAAA's initiatives to improve its energy consumption. He highlighted CAAA's efforts on the installation in the development of the new ISO 50001 Energy Management Standard. He also spoke about CAAA's van pool participation, its lighting controls project and its continued use of building energy audits for its facilities.

CAAA's Energy Manager Lauren Shipman also informed the crowd about the BEM program and how they are able to make a difference. She explained that because employees are in their building every day, they might not notice the potential energy-saving opportunities.

"Proposing building walkthroughs with the BEMs seems to work really well," she said. "You can give information on how your building operates and we will help you look for potential energy opportunities."

Shipman said that while not all ideas that come out of a walkthrough will get done right away, there will inevitably be energy savings from the improvements that come out of it.

Established Oct. 1977, CAAA maintains ordnance professionals and infrastructure in order to receive, store, ship, produce, renovate and demilitarize conventional ammunition, missiles and related components. The Army activity is a subordinate of the Joint Munitions Command and is located on Naval Support Activity Crane.
