BLUE GRASS ARMY DEPOT, Ky. -- Blue Grass Army Depot celebrated Earth Day on Thursday, April 19, by cleaning the depot's Muddy Creek, passing out native Kentucky grass seed to employees, and cementing six benches along the Lake Buck Historical Walking Trail.

The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources assisted the depot in cementing benches along the trail grounds. Employees from around the depot and Blue Grass Chemical Agent-Destruction Pilot Plant, or BGCAPP, worked together to place the benches.

"We wanted to put these benches in to provide adequate rest and beautiful vistas for visitors to behold," said Nathan White, BGAD Archaeologist and Land Manager.

The depot's Industrial Services Division built most of the benches with materials supplied by the depot and a grant from the National Public Lands Day Foundation, said White.

"People (do) come out here to the trail. I just saw a woman and her little boy sitting on one of the benches we set last year on Earth Day, so these benches have been (used)," said Raysha Reed, Environmental Intern.

Craig Culotta, Depot Piping Checker and Earth Day volunteer, shared his definition of Earth Day.

"It's giving something back to the environment," said Culotta. "We couldn't be here without the trees and this beautiful clean air to breathe and if we can help by planting trees and keeping the area looking beautiful, I think it's giving something back."

Earth Day is not the only time of the year that the depot goes green. The depot's Environmental Division runs a wide variety of environmental stewardship programs, including, native tree and grass seed restoration projects, wildlife conservation efforts, adult and youth hunts, and educational wildlife management demonstrations.

For White, Earth Day is every day.

"It's not the kind of thing we should celebrate once a year," said White. "It's something we try in the environmental office to make part of our everyday operations."
