WASHINGTON (April 19, 2012) -- The number of organizations providing security and/or security assistance within the National Capital Region may be hard to comprehend for the average resident. But more than 50 Leadership Greater Washington members now have a better idea of how the civil and military organizations support and cooperate with each other after their visit to the Joint Force Headquarters - National Capital Region and the U.S. Army Military District of Washington (JFHQ-NCR/MDW) at Fort Lesley J. McNair.
Leadership Greater Washington is an organization constructed by a group of regional leaders, six area Chambers of Commerce and three committed organizations to identify and connect diverse leaders and stimulate their collaborative efforts through dynamic education and membership programs that promote dialogue, cooperation and involvement enabling area leaders to find effective solutions to regional challenges.
Understanding the support JFHQ-NCR/MDW provides area security efforts was a natural connection to make for the group and another step in the joint military command's outreach efforts to the community.
"During a crisis such as 9-11, leaders need to know who, by name, to contact for support and what sort of support is available to them," said Arnie Claudio, JFHQ-NCR/MDW Interagency Program director. "Anytime we can talk to area leaders such as these members from Leadership Greater Washington, we take it. In today's security environment, it is not only best to know the name of the person to contact for support and what they have to bring to an incident, but to know that individual personally in order to build trust which is very, very important in a crisis."
Leadership Greater Washington members received a briefing during their three hour visit by JFHQ-NCR/MDW Deputy Commander Egon Hawrylak on the capabilities and mission of the unit as well as a tour of some of the communication support equipment the command uses to accomplish its mission.
JFHQ-NCR/MDW has its headquarters at Fort McNair, Washington, D.C. and is responsible for land-based homeland defense, defense support of civil authorities, and incident management in the NCR.
It draws together the existing resources of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and NORAD into a single point headquarters for planning, coordination and execution of the mission in the National Capital Region.
