FORT BRAGG, N.C. (April 12, 2012) In recognition of April as National Sexual Assault Awareness Month, the Army Forces Command's Equal Opportunity and Sexual Harassment/Assault Response and Prevention Program office launched a campaign this week to get Soldiers and civilians to sign a SHARP Pledge.
The Pledge is a FORSCOM-specific initiative created by FORSCOM's EO/SHARP team to pro-actively engage Soldiers and civilians in discussion and making a commitment to combat sexual harassment and assault.
By signing the Pledge, a person commits "to ACT, Intervene, and SUSTAIN A HIGH LEVEL OF MOTIVATION to eliminate Sexual Harassment and Sexual Assault in the workplace." The pledge is based on the Army's I.A.M. (Intervene, Act, Motivate) Strong campaign.
"Our team collaborated in the writing of the Pledge," said Lt. Col. Jeffrey Simpson, the EO/SHARP program manager. "Because FORSCOM is a four-star headquarters, we wanted to set the highest standard we could to uphold the Army Values, prevent sexual harassment and assault, and make it clear that it would not be tolerated."
The team set up a station in the courtyard of the FORSCOM/U.S. Army Reserve Headquarters building where people going into and out of Marshall Hall could stop to pick up literature, ask questions and sign the Pledge.
"We're having representatives from area Army Recruiting stations join us to reinforce the Army's commitment to a united front against sexual harassment and sexual assault from the very start of a Soldier's career, from time of entry to separation," said Sgt. Major Carl Downey of the FORSCOM EO/SHARP office.
Their ultimate goal is 1,500 signatures by the end of the month.
They will be back the week of April 23-27 from 7:30 to 9 a.m. and 3 to 5 p.m.
