WIESBADEN, Germany (April 11, 2012) -- Sgt. 1st Class Jeffrey Guyot, from the 1st Military Intelligence Battalion on Wiesbaden Army Airfield, was honored at the West Hessian Police Presidium, April 3, for intervening in a hit-and-run incident.
The incident occurred Feb. 14 when a car pulled out of a gas station near Wiesbaden, knocked off the bumper of another car and drove away. Guyot caught up with the driver and signaled to him to go back to the incident scene. When the driver showed no reaction, Guyot took a picture of the car he was following, turned around and reported it to German Polizei officers, who were on the scene with the damaged car.
"This picture proved to be of high value for the investigations," said Robert Schaefer, West Hessian police president. "Thanks to your behavior the police were able to track down the driver of the car."
Schaefer also acted on behalf of Wiesbaden's Citizens and Polizei Association as he presented a letter of appreciation to Guyot.
"We want to thank you because we do need civic courage so much," said Schaefer. "There are statistics that show that only five percent of the population would have done what you did. You are a role model for us, and with this recognition we want to show society that there are people who go the extra mile without directly benefiting from it, thus promoting justice."
Guyot said his intervention was a natural result of his values.
"For me this is personal. I don't believe in looking the other way when something happens," he said. "I know what can happen when good people don't do what is right."
