FORT STEWART, Ga. - Those of us in uniform serve because we love our country; our spouses serve out of their love for us. They support us on the home front while we defend our country's freedoms, ensuring that day-to-day operations run smoothly and efficiently.
Our military spouses play an important role in mission readiness. They send us care packages full of our favorites and make sure the bills are paid on time. They help our children finish their homework and take them to their after-school activities.
They offer others a shoulder to lean on as they experience the stress of a first deployment, and comfort the little ones when they ask 'When's mom or dad coming home?' Our spouses sacrifice their time, and they sacrifice their careers.
They also endure tremendous hardships and pain.
On April 5, we pay our respects to those spouses who continue to serve--now as a survivor and a living reminder of a Fallen Hero's commitment and dedication to this nation. We honor our spouses who continue to serve proudly, even after their loved ones made the ultimate sacrifice.
Gold Star Spouses, formerly known as Gold Star Wives, is a nonprofit organization that began in April 1945 to honor the ultimate sacrifice made by the Fallen and their Families. They work to improve the benefits and quality of life for these surviving spouses and their children.
month, on the 67th anniversary of this organization, the Third Infantry Division, Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield will pay a special tribute to our Gold Star Spouses who's Soldiers never returned from the combat zone.
Join us at 11 a.m., April 5, on Fort Stewart's hallowed ground and living memorial -- Warriors Walk. Our fallen Soldiers are never forgotten, it's thanks to their loved ones who continue to carry out their legacies, continue to selflessly support and defend, continue to make them proud.
