FORT LEE, Va. (March 20, 2012) -- With the activation of Company J, 244th Quartermaster Battalion, 23rd QM Brigade, QM School, in a ceremony March 19 at Fort Lee, the consolidation of all legal training to central Virginia is complete.
The ceremony marked a historic milestone for the Judge Advocate General's Corps, of JAG, and the relocation offers opportunities for combined training within the corps, said Maj. Gen. Clyde "Butch" Tate, the deputy judge advocate general, during the ceremony at the Post Field House.
Soldiers attending advanced individual training to become paralegal specialists will be assigned to Company J, with the first class on Fort Lee scheduled to begin March 26. The training was previously located at Fort Jackson, S.C.
"Now we can truly say we train as we fight -- shoulder to shoulder," said Tate. "We will enhance our ability to have judge advocates learning from paralegals, and paralegals from our judge advocates. The benefits will be felt across the Army in years to come."
The advanced individual training, or AIT, company is located 106 miles from Charlottesville, Va., where the Judge Advocate General's Legal Center and School is located. As a result, the JAG command can provide greater input to the training programs provided for paralegal specialists, said Tate.
During the ceremony, Capt. Larris Hutton and 1st Sgt. Terrence Barnes, both of the JAG Corps, took command and responsibility of the AIT company. This is the first time in the history of the AIT company that it is led entirely by members of the JAG Corps, said Tate.
The corps has already had a partnership with Fort Lee, and now looks forward to building a stronger relationship with the community, said Tate.
"All of us on Fort Lee could not be more proud to extend greetings and a warm welcome to the Judge Advocate General's Corps and our fighting Juliet Company Jaguars," said Brig. Gen. Gwen Bingham, quartermaster general of the Army and commandant of the Quartermaster School, which is a part of the Combined Arms Support Command.
