Today, we honor the father of our country - George Washington. He was a man who lived by his convictions and selflessly served our country in times of peace and war. He commanded the Continental Army during the American Revolution, helped in the writing of our Constitution, and served as our first President.
Shaped by his experiences as Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army, George Washington understood that the best security for the Nation was a ready and capable military that could deter our enemies. Central to his philosophy was the citizen-soldier as the guarantor of our liberty. With the Soldier as the centerpiece, he established the basic principles that guide our defense policy today: a well-equipped, professional Army supported by America's industrial and professional institutions.
While we honor the life and accomplishments of George Washington, we also honor you-the American Soldier-as you carry forth his legacy of selfless service to the Nation. You are the guardians of our country. Your willingness to sacrifice preserves our way of life and builds a better future for others. You have the gratitude of our Nation. You are the strength of the Nation.
