Fort Lesley J. McNair, D.C. (Feb. 29, 2012) -- Civilian law enforcement officials from the National Capital Region were recognized for their close cooperative work with the military during a luncheon ceremony hosted by Maj. Gen. Michael S. Linnington, the commanding general of the Joint Force Headquarters - National Capital Region and the U.S. Army Military District of Washington (JFHQ-NCR/MDW) at the Fort McNair Officer's Club.
Linnington recognized the officials for their sponsoring of the MDW Provost Marshal Office during the 2011 International Association Chief of Police/DynCorp Civilian Law Enforcement Military Cooperation Awards, which resulted in the MDW PMO taking top honors in that competition.
That award recognizes excellence in law enforcement cooperation between civilian and military law enforcement agencies for innovative joint efforts that lead to improvement in public safety for both military and civilian communities. MDW PMO was presented their award Oct. 23 at the IACP's 118th Annual Conference in Chicago, Illinois.
Linnington also highlighted the ongoing trust, mutual respect, and close working relationship his command and the PMO have with civilian law enforcement within the NCR.
JFHQ-NCR/MDW Joint Interagency Coordinator Arnie Claudio said in an earlier interview that the key to the command's PMO success is the consistent effort to stay in touch with its interagency partners.
"When there is a crisis, personally knowing who to call for assistance as well as knowing what type of support is available to you is of paramount importance and it is that effort, to stay in touch with each other that really is being highlighted by these recognition of support awards presented here today," said Claudio. "The National Capital Region is the model for how domestic security is done in the United States."
Recognized for their support were the Metropolitan Police Department, United States Park Police, United States Secret Service, FBI, Pentagon Police, and the United States Capital Police.
Linnington also presented the IACP/DynCorp Civilian Law Enforcement-Military Cooperation Award for the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments Police Chiefs Committee, to Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, Chief of Police Stephen Holl; the current Chairmen of the Police Chief's Committee.
Over the past year, JFHQ-NCR/MDW worked and trained closely with its numerous inter-agency law enforcement partners in the NCR as part of a Mil-Civ team focused on protecting both military and civilian personnel and public officials.
Cooperative events worked in the NCR include the State of the Union Address, The U.S. Army Band concert with the People's Liberation Army (China) Band Concerts and the Memorial and Veterans Day ceremonies at the Tomb of the Unknowns - Arlington National Cemetery.
The NCR serves as the seat of the U.S. government and is home to most senior civilian and military leaders and historic national icons. It is the fourth largest metropolitan area in the United States; home to more than 5 million residents and 20 million tourists annually. It has the second largest public transit system, more than 2,000 non-profits and international non-government organizations, produces a Gross Regional Product of $228 billion annually, and home to more than 230 individual Federal departments and agencies representing all three branches of government.
