FORT EUSTIS, Va. (Feb. 7, 2012) -- Gen. Robert W. Cone, commanding general of U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command, led an Army-wide forum Jan. 30 to discuss the Army leader development strategy to shape the Army of 2020.
TRADOC is spearheading the synchronization of the institution, the operation and the policy of leader development to achieve the effects the Army wants for a 21st century Army, Cone said.
"Army leader development is a challenging subject because really, frankly, everybody in the Army is in charge of leader development," the general said.
Senior leaders and subject matter experts from across the Army attended the forum. The attendees reviewed TRADOC's Center for Army Leadership's report on several initiatives involving leadership and professional military education. The initiatives stem from the Army's leader development strategy approved in November 2009.
The strategy was developed in response to calls from senior leaders, Soldiers and Army civilians to develop better ways to strengthen leader development in professional military education for both soldiers and Army civilians.
The center's director, Col. Thomas Guthrie, led discussion and introduced various Army civilian and military experts. Guthrie is responsible for overseeing the more than 30 Army leadership development strategy initiatives currently being developed by organizations throughout the Army.
The quarterly forum focused on some of the various initiatives supporting the strategy and how those initiatives are faring after 10 years of persistent conflict.
Topics included discussion about the Army's universal intermediate level education for field grade officers, ways ahead for Army civilian leader development, changes in warrant officer education and responsibilities, and possible future alignment of professional military education to the Army's force generation process.
