Major General Mark A. Milley graduated from Princeton University in 1980, and was commissioned through ROTC.
Major General Milley has had multiple command and staff positions in six Infantry Divisions and Special Forces over the last 31 years including two previous tours with the 10th Mountain Division (LI). His initial assignment was with the 82d Airborne Division and later the 5th Special Forces Group at Fort Bragg. Following the Infantry Officer Advanced Course he was reassigned to the 7th Infantry Division (Light) at Fort Ord, California where he served as an assistant S3 and commanded two light infantry companies and was the battalion S3 in the 5th Battalion 21st Infantry. Upon completion of the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth he served his initial assignment with the 10th Mountain Division (LI) as the 2d Brigade Combat Team S3 and Executive Officer. He was reassigned to command the 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry (Air Assault), 2d Infantry Division, Korea followed by duty as a Senior Infantry Battalion Task Force Observer/Controller at the Joint Readiness Center, Fort Polk, Louisiana. Following the War College, MG Milley served as the G3 and Chief of Staff of the 25th Infantry Division (Light) at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. After deploying and serving as the Commander of the United States Provisional Brigade/Task Force Eagle with the 25th Infantry Division (Light), he returned to Fort Drum and took command of the 2nd Brigade Combat Team (Commando), 10th Mountain Division (LI) and led the "Commandos" on deployments to both Afghanistan and Iraq. He was reassigned as the Joint Operations Division Chief on The Joint Staff in Washington, D.C. and later served as the Military Assistant to the Secretary of Defense. He next served as Deputy Commanding General (Operations), 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) and deployed as the DCG(O) for Regional Command- East, Afghanistan. Major General Milley's most recent assignment was as The Joint Staff's Deputy Director for Regional Operations (DDRO/J33 Current (Operations) at the Pentagon.
Major General Milley's operational deployments include: the Multinational Force and Observers (MFO), Sinai, Egypt; Operation JUST CAUSE, Panama; Operation UPHOLD DEMOCRACY, Haiti; Operation JOINT ENDEAVOR, Bosnia-Herzegovina; Operation IRAQI FREEDOM, Iraq; and Operation ENDURING FREEDOM, Afghanistan.
Major General Milley's education includes a Bachelors Degree in Political Science from Princeton University, and Masters Degrees from Columbia University (International Relations) and from the United States Naval War College (National Security and Strategic Studies). He is also a graduate of the MIT Seminar XXI National Security Studies program.
