WEST POINT, N.Y. (Jan. 25, 2012) -- Kira Floersheim was selected among several local outstanding youths and will compete against other Boys and Girls Club members for the New York State Youth of the Year.
The selected youth will receive a $1,000 college scholarship from Tupperware Brands Corporation.
As West Point's Youth of the Year, 14-year-old Kira is recognized by the Boys and Girls Club for her sound character, leadership skills and willingness to give back to the community.
The Youth of the Year competition encourages club members to reach their full potential by achieving academic success, leading healthy lifestyles and contributing to their communities. Youth of the Year honorees are shining examples and living proof that great futures start at a Boys and Girls Club.
"Kira is a wonderful example to all youth who participate in our program," Maureen Harter, Director of the Middle School Teen Center, said. "She is caring, respectful, responsible, honest and a great role model who demonstrates extraordinary character on a daily basis when she is at the West Point Middle School Teen Center."
If Kira is selected at the State competition, she will compete for the title of Northeast Region Youth of the Year and an additional $10,000 scholarship from Tupperware.
Five regional selectees will advance to Washington, D.C., in September to compete for the title of BGCA's National Youth of the Year.
The National Youth of the Year selectee will receive an additional scholarship of up to $50,000 from the Rick and Susan Goings Foundation and will have the opportunity to meet with the President of the United States at the White House.
