FORT BRAGG, N.C. -- For all the work that Soldiers and their Families do, there must be leisure. For leisure activities, Fort Bragg's bowling centers are great sources of fun and activities.

From the New Year's Eve party at Pope Lanes to the more recent Dollar Days every Monday at Dragon Lanes, there is no shortage of excitement.

Fort Bragg continuously holds bowling events to entice Families. A look at the Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation's website shows that some of those events include "Tone Your Bones," a weight-loss initiative at Dragon Lanes, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 2 to 4 p.m.; Bring your "A" Game, which gives a free game for every A received by school-aged children under the age of 18 on their report card at both facilities February, March and June; and Dollar Days each Wednesday, at Pope Lanes, beginning March 21, which will feature $1 each games, shoes, hot dogs, nachos, draft beer and sodas. Also ongoing is Senior Citizen Day at Dragon Lanes, held 7 to 10 a.m., each Tuesday, for seniors 55 and older. Senior Citizen Day offers games and shoes for $1.

James Shepherd frequents Dragon Lanes with fellow Soldiers Jessie Cabrera and Luis Arenas.

The three were joined by Shepherd's wife, Jessica, in a friendly game, Friday. In the end, there's a playoff between Shepherd and Cabrera, arguably the two best bowlers of the group.

"We're always competitive. Every time we come here, it's the best two out of three," said Cabrera, who usually bowls in the 140 to 160 range. "We go back and forth."

The two said they also take advantage of the $1 days on Mondays.

"The prices are good," Shepherd said. "It's a fun, recreational thing to do."

The bowling centers feature 24 lanes equipped with automated scoring, according to the FMWR website. Bumper rails are available for small children.

Services available at Dragon Lanes include electronic bingo, portable handheld units that can be played from anywhere in the center; open, league and tournament bowling, party packages, arcade games and the Strike Zone Snack Bar/Grill.

Pope Lanes features 20 lanes with bumpers, automatic scoring with 32 inch LCD monitors, quick shot bingo, video games, a fully stocked pro-shop with a certified technician and a full-service snack bar.

Airborne Lanes has been closed for renovations since last May. The kitchen, concourse, bathrooms, dining area and office space will be renovated to offer a friendlier set-up for customers, officials said.

Until it reopens, bowling remains available at both Dragon Lanes, at Building 4-2374, off Reilly Road, next to the Mini Mall and at Pope Lanes, 751 Armistead St.
