Acosta was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 5th Infantry, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, serving as a combat medic in Afghanistan when his vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device while conducting a route clearance mission Dec. 3, 2011, resulting in his combat injuries.
