FORT McCOY, Wis. -- Fort McCoy recycled almost 50 percent of its waste stream during fiscal year (FY) 2011, according to Michael Miller.
Miller, Fort McCoy Water and Wastewater branch chief, who oversees the Fort McCoy recycling program, said the 49.9 percent recycling rate marks the fourth consecutive year Fort McCoy has exceeded the Department of Army's 40 percent recycling goal.
Installation personnel also can help recycling efforts by learning which materials can be recycled, Miller said. Most personnel only think of recycling as paper, cardboard, glass, plastic, and metal cans.
Miller said installation officials continually evaluate the various types of solid waste generated by the different types of activities on post.
Items such as CDs, batteries, ink cartridges, florescent lamps, waste vegetable oil, and many others can be recycled. Currently, Fort McCoy recycles more than 30 different materials. A full list of items can be in Fort McCoy Regulation 200-1. The regulation can be found on the Fort McCoy Corporate Network.
Fort McCoy always is looking to expand the recycling program, Miller said. If there are activities on post that want to increase their recycling efforts or even new activities looking to develop a recycling program, they can call Miller and he will help them set up a program.
Also, if there is anyone that generates a waste that is unique to their operations, recycling personnel will come out, take a look at it and maybe find a way to recycle it.
Recycling personnel provide recycling containers and will place customers on a service schedule, Miller said.
Recycling personnel make regular stops throughout the installation to pick up recyclable materials. The Recycling Center, building 2218, also has a bulk shredder for use by personnel, such as military personnel or units, who need to shred documents with identifying information.
