Former SMAs talk shop with sergeants major students at USASMA

FORT BLISS, Texas -- (at right) Former Sgt. Maj. of the Army Jack L. Tilley, the Army's 12th SMA, answers a question asked by a Sergeants Major Course Class 58 student during a panel discussion led by six of the Army's 12 former SMAs at the U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy East Auditorium Jan. 7. While attending the current SMA's Nominative Conference near the academy, he and the other five former SMAs took time to meet more than 645 senior NCOs attending the course and provide some critical advice to them.

Hall, the 11th SMA sitting second from the right, fields a question from a Sergeants Major Course Class 58 student as five other former SMAs listen at the U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy East Auditorium Jan. 7. Half of the Army's 12 former SMAs showed for the annual event and provided some savvy straight talk about a range of issues from the presidential race to what it takes to succeed as a leader in today's Army. Sitting from left are Sergeants Major of the Army George W. Dunaway, the second SMA, William G. Bainbridge, the Army's fifth, Glen E. Morrell, the Army's seventh, Julius W. Gates, the Army's eighth, Hall, and Jack L. Tilley, the 12th.
