USAG-HI to host second Facebook town hall

By Ms Lacey Justinger (USAG Hawaii)November 23, 2011

WHEELER ARMY AIRFIELD, Hawaii -- The U.S. Army-Hawaii community can get their concerns and questions addressed during the garrison's second Facebook town hall.

U.S. Army Garrison-Hawaii will continue its latest initiative to encourage free-flowing communication between the installation and its customers during the virtual town hall, 6-7:30 p.m., Nov. 30.

"We were seeing poor attendance at the traditional town hall meetings, but we were getting tremendous participation from social media outlets," said Col. Douglas Mulbury, commander, USAG-HI.

During the last town hall on the garrison's Facebook page, www.facebook.com/usaghawaii, participants praised the new forum that allowed them to interact with USAG-HI subject matter experts, or SMEs, in a venue they were familiar with that also was convenient.

With traditional town halls, SMEs from USAG-HI's organizations -- including the Directorate of Emergency Services, which oversees police, fire, traffic and security issues; Island Palm Communities, which handles family housing; and the Directorate of Public Works, which is responsible for road construction -- are on hand to respond to questions from live audience members.

During the town hall in cyberspace, SMEs will similarly gather to answer questions posed, but attendees can interact from the comfort of their homes, cubicles or phones.

"Soldiers and their families lead very busy lives, and their time is valuable," Mulbury said. "Having the virtual town hall will provide convenience and alleviate the need for families to arrange child care."

SMEs will address questions and comments posted on the "Garrison Facebook Town Hall" page, located under the "Events" tab, on USAG-HI's page.

Participants who post comments on the USAG-HI's "Wall" will be redirected to the event page, the only place questions will be addressed. This is a family-friendly event; comments and questions that are offensive or derogatory will be removed.

"This Facebook town hall is the perfect time for Soldiers, family members, civilians and community members to speak about what's on their minds and get answers," said Dennis Drake, director, USAG-HI Public Affairs.

All issues will be addressed; however, patience is requested in the response times as some questions may need more research or answers from another organization or tenant unit. Any queries not addressed that night will be answered in the coming days.

Anonymous or private questions can be emailed to AskTheCommander.usaghi@us.army.mil or posted at ice.disa.mil.
