KAISERSLAUTERN, Germany -- Youth football in the Kaiserslautern Military Community never looked better, thanks in part to local generosity funding new uniforms and equipment.
This years, as in the past, some of the contributions to the Combined Federal Campaign Overseas' Family Support and Youth Programs fund helped pay for new gear. The FSYP fund allows federal employees to contribute directly to their own community.
Last year, employees from among 55 units in the Kaiserslautern footprint contributed more than $325,000 to the CFC-O. Of that, almost $11,000 went to the FSYP fun, said Antonnete Fernandez, U.S. Army Garrison Kaiserslautern's community area project officer.
"I like to call it the Family, Soldier and Youth Programs fund," she said. "I don't want to leave out our Soldiers. In reality, the FSYP fund goes to service members as well."
Celebrating its 50th anniversary, CFC is an opportunity for federal employees to pledge money to more than 2,400 charities worldwide and the Family Support and Youth Programs fund from Oct. 3 until Dec. 2. During the 2010 CFC-O campaign, 80,000 employees contributed more than $13.8 million dollars.
In the past, FSYP funds have gone to projects such as helping build new youth centers, providing video equipment for service members to tape themselves reading to their children, buying a van to be used as transportation for Soldier trips and youth sports teams to away games and providing equipment and DVDs to a movie tent at a deployed location, Fernandez said.
In July, the U.S. Air Force in Europe presented the 86th Airlift Wing with almost $22,000 for their FSYP fund.
With only two weeks left in the campaign, the U.S. Army Garrison Kaiserslautern raised more than $220,500, she said.
"It is never too late to contribute," said Fernandez, who said giving can be done a variety of ways including online, with a pledge card or through a payroll allotment.
In addition, garrison employees will be onsite at the Vogelweh Commissary Nov. 22-23 and at the Kaiserslautern Military Community Center food court Nov. 25. All money donated on those days will go toward the FSYP fund.
