FORT GEORGE G. MEADE, Md. - The University of Maryland athletic department honored Fort Meade service members at the Terps's football game against Virginia on Saturday.
Before the game, Fort Meade Garrison Commander Col. Ed Rothstein and Annabella Riccio, vice president of marketing and development, USO, talked on the UMD sports radio network about the installation's growth and role in the region, and USO's partnership with Fort Meade.
25 Soldiers from the U.S. Army Student Detachment unveiled a large American flag for the pre-game festivities.
Rothstein and Fort Meade Command Sergeant Major Command Sgt. Maj. Charles Smith also participated in the game coin toss.
Later, Sgt. Lakesha Copeland, HHC, chaplain and local mission volunteer; Staff Sgt. Scedric Moss, 902nd Military Intelligence Brigade; and Staff Sgt. Christopher May and Sgt. Martin Hunt, both of the 241st Military Police Company, who both recently returned from Afghanistan, were recognized during the "Salute to Our Troops." The Soldiers were hand selected for their outstanding service at Fort Meade.
Rothstein, Smith and UMD Athletic Director Kevin Anderson joined in recognizing the service members.
The recognition during the game represents a continued partnership between Fort Meade, USO and the University of Maryland to recognize service members at UMD's athletic events.
