FORT BENNING, Ga. -- Soldiers of 3rd Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, headed to the field Oct. 25 for Hammer Focus.
A monthlong exercise, it is geared toward training Soldiers in a variety of tasks they will have to execute in March at the National Training Center on Fort Irwin, Calif.
Trainer-mentors will evaluate leaders and their units on tasks to include offensive and defensive operations, breaching obstacles, medical procedures and combined arms live-fire exercises.
"The training will integrate assets such as military intelligence, close air support and field artillery," said Maj. Alric Francis, the brigade's executive officer.
Francis said the training gives leaders the opportunity to practice techniques crucial to mission success.
Following training iterations, the trainer-mentors will review actions Soldiers need to sustain and those to improve.
The 3rd HBCT is not scheduled to deploy, but lessons learned during Hammer Focus will prepare the Sledgehammer Brigade for contingency missions it may face in the future.
The unit has deployed to Iraq four times in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation New Dawn, earning recognition as one of the Army's most deployed combat brigades.
